A Second Life

After the pandemic, a young couple undertook the transformation of an old apartment in Medellín, with the vision of creating a home that would offer a complete refuge. This project, led by Diamantina & La Perla, managed to turn a deteriorated space into a cozy home, demonstrating the power of renovation and design to give a second life to forgotten spaces.

Paradoxically, this dream home is located in a building over thirty years old. When they acquired it, the property was deteriorated due to administrative problems, and the apartment was in terrible condition.

“It's incredible how surprised people are when they arrive at the building, because they can't imagine that in this construction, worn down by time, there is an apartment with these qualities,” says Susana Mejía, designer and co-founder of Diamantina & La Perla, responsible for the remodeling.

Transformation of a neglected space

Diamantina & La Perla renovates an old apartment in Medellín, transforming it into a cozy home. The renovation prioritizes the integration of spaces, natural light, and the use of fine materials.

The original layout was typical of the period: contained spaces, separated by walls and with little integration, especially in the social area. However, with 280 square meters, double heights, spacious terraces, two levels, and large windows, Susana took advantage of the opportunity to create what she calls “the clubhouse.”

The living room was transformed by removing walls and restoring the original parquet flooring. “The remodeling was simple, removing walls to allow the space to flow and let in natural light.” She recovered original natural materials and incorporated others to balance the past and present.

The furniture reflects these materials, with pieces made of cement, wood, and natural fibers, and sinuous shapes in the staircase, coffee table, sofa, pouf, and armchair. The colors blend with neutrals and the green of the trees, creating a space with identity.

“My advice: never marry a trend, but look for what identifies us,” says Susana Mejía.
